At Brisbane Tank Manufacturing stainless steel tank manufacturing and everything that comes with that is our bread and butter.
It’s what we’re known for; precision fabrication, durability and clean finishes that stand up to demanding industrial environments. But every now and then, a project comes along that nudges us just slightly out of the usual lane… and we’re all for it.
This time, it’s a mild steel powder hopper destined for a filtration system at a treatment plant where it will play a key role in chemical dosing. Not the flashiest job at first glance, but if you know the industry, you know how critical this gear is.
Get it right and the system hums along efficiently. Get it wrong and things unravel quickly.
The same standards apply - tight tolerances, structural integrity and practical design that works in the real world and not just on paper.

Built for Purpose (and Built to Last)
This hopper is being fabricated to handle powdered chemicals with consistency and reliability. That means careful consideration around:
Flow characteristics (no bridging or clogging)
Structural strength under load
Compatibility with the dosing system
Long term durability in a demanding environment
Mild steel might not have the corrosion resistance of stainless steel, but in the right application and with the right coatings and finishes, it’s smarter than you think.
A Bit of a Head Turner Too
Now here’s the part we didn’t expect…
As the build has come together on the workshop floor, it’s started to look less like a standard hopper and more like something straight out of a space mission. Honestly, if someone told you this was a prototype lander designed by NASA for a future Mars mission, you’d probably believe them.
There’s something about the geometry, the angles, the structure - it’s got that rugged, purposeful look. Function driven design has a way of doing that. No fluff, no excess, just form following function and somehow ending up looking pretty impressive in the process.
Why It Matters
Projects like this are a good reminder that while materials might change, good fabrication principles don’t. Whether it’s stainless steel or mild steel, large scale tanks or specialised components, the goal stays the same.
Build it right. Build it to last. Build it so it performs exactly as it should when it matters most.
