At Brisbane Tank Manufacturing, we don’t just build new tanks. Sometimes the best solution is to take an existing tank, give it some attention,and create a new purpose for something that has already delivered years of service.

That’s exactly what’s happening with this tank.

At around 20 years old, this tank has certainly earned its place in the industry. Rather than simply writing it off because it is no longer suited to its original application, the BTM team is taking a different approach; repurposing it for a new life and a new product. It sort of makes us feel like this type of project is even more special because we aren’t just “throwing something beautiful away” - we’re giving it a new lease of life and that’s super cool to us. 

And that process starts with getting it safely back to the workshop.

From the job site to the workshop

A little while back the BTM crew were in the process of removing the tank so it can be transported back to the workshop. Once it arrives, the real transformation begins.

A tank refurbishment or repurposing project is about much more than simply giving an older tank a cosmetic makeover. The team needs to assess the tank, understand its existing condition and determine what needs to be modified, repaired or upgraded to suit its new role.

That’s where experience matters.

After 20 years of service, a tank has a history. It has been exposed to its working environment, weather, operational demands and the general wear and tear that comes with industrial use. Before it can be given a new purpose, the BTM team needs to understand exactly what they are working with.

Why repurpose an existing tank?

There are some very good reasons to consider repurposing or refurbishing an existing tank rather than automatically starting from scratch.

Firstly, there can be significant value in the existing structure. If the tank is fundamentally sound and suitable for modification, there may be an opportunity to extend its useful working life rather than replacing the entire unit.

Secondly, repurposing can be a more practical approach. Every project is different and sometimes an existing tank provides a solid starting point for a new application.

And thirdly, there is something particularly satisfying about seeing a piece of equipment that has already served one purpose being transformed to do another job entirely.

Depending on the project, this can involve repairs, modifications, fabrication work, fittings, structural changes, preparation and finishing, all with the goal of producing a tank that is fit for its new application.

A 20 year old tank that is still suitable for repurposing represents durability.

It has already stood the test of time.

Rather than looking at its age as a disadvantage, BTM is looking at what the tank can become.
